Here's an example of a real virtuoso using of a breath controller for everything: Sometimes for strings, sometimes not, for solo wind instruments most of the time, ensemble I'll more often use other controllers. Not everyone clicks with a BC, but personally speaking, I love playing virtual wind instruments with them. I've never tried a harmonica VST but if it were well programmed rather than cheaply done, that should be the case for it too. Sometimes faders are fine for them, other times, it really helps to have a breath controller. While faders are most standard for strings and other instrument, normally speaking for any wind or breath using instruments like flutes or horns, a breath controller will give you the best most authentic experience.
